Here are this weeks picks. WEEK ONE
Cincinnati -2 At Baltimore
Baltimore is in transition, but Cincinati looks like a team caught in a CAT 5 tornado. Rookie QB Joe Flacco starts for Balt., but I suspect new Head Coach John Harbaugh will run to protect him, especially since Ogden is no longer there to protect the flank. McGahee won't play, but I think they'll win outright. I'll take the Ravens
NY Jets -3 At Miami
Miami will play harder and better but not win many games. At least not yet. THey'll try to grind it out and keep Favre off the field. But Pennington doesn't have the arm strength or the targets to keep 8 out of the box. THe Jets are dubious on defense & may be facing a renewed Ricky Williams, but I'm betting they force Pennington to beat them & he just can't. Don't listen to this tripe about Favre not being comfy either. Jets to cover, but these games are historically close.
At New England -16 Kansas City
Surprise! Surprise! Tom Brady is playing. The Pats are gonna need 50 TD's this year, because it looks like his defense is gonna give p 49. THe Chiefs are gonna run Larry Johnson successfully. Can they run the ball effectively enough to keep Brady off the field? I bet not, but to cover 16? I say yes. Chiefs to cover
At Pittsburgh -6.5 Houston
This is the most difficult pick of the week because both teams historically get off to good starts. The spread is too high even at home. Houston to cover
Jacksonville -3 At Tennessee
It's amazing Jeff Fisher has won with such under performers. Titans play tough at home, but I'm not sold just yet. I'll take the Jags
Detroit -3 At Atlanta
Early opinion has Atlanta stinking , but they've cleaned house in the Vick aftermath & are starting new. Good move in the long run. They'll play harder & get better, I suspect as the season goes, even if they don't win many games. Detroit, a road favorite? That's tough to swallow, but I'll go with the LIONS grudgingly.
At Buffalo -1 Seattle
Buffalo, again is a notoriously slow starter & Seattle is fundamentally sound & always prepared. I'll take the Seahawks
At New Orleans -3 Tampa Bay
Will anyone be in the seats for this game? I'll take the SAints anyway.
At Philadelphia -8 St. Louis
St Louis is just plain awful & worse on the road. Desean Jackson is making noise as a rookie & will make a big splash this week. BLOW OUT. Eagles
Dallas -5.5 At Cleveland
If this game were later in the year & colder, Cleveland would be a good pick. The Cowboys are everyone's fave right now & I'm betting they're pumped. It'll be a great test for Cleveland's revamped defense. I'll take the COWBOYS, grudgingly
At San Diego -9 Carolina
Carolina won't score on the Chargers even w/o Shawne Merriman. On the other hand the Chargers look loaded on offense & are itching to make an early run. I'll take the Chargers
Arizona -2.5 At San Francisco
The Cardinals used to play in Missouri, so they gotta SHOW ME first, before I pick them. the Niners are home, Gore is healthy. I'll take the 49ers
At Indianapolis -9.5 Chicago
You're kidding right???? COLTS
At Green Bay -2.5 Minnesota
Big night for Aaron Rodgers, but it'll be a bigger night for Adrian Peterson who is easily the best player in this game. The Packers are up against the best defense in football, now that Shawne Merriman is out of action in San Diego. VIKINGS
Denver -3 At Oakland
Do I really have to pick this? Can't we just go get Craig Morton & Ken Stabler and it around instead? THese games are always close, it seems & Darren McFadden will break out against a pathetic Broncos defense. Raiders to cover
