TOP 300 MOVIES OF ALL TIME: #298-THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

There have been many great sequels over time, but "The Bride of Frankenstein" remains among the elite film sequels. Director James Whale may have intended this as a "send up" to the whole concept, but in that regard he failed.

Boris Karloff,of course reprises his role as the monster and generates genuine empathy in his demand for a recreated wife. In the original "Frankenstein",the monster surprisingly was viewed in some respects sympathetically by audiences. Hence, a more human dynamic in this sequel.

Of course, the most memorable scene in the film is that of Elsa Lanchester, playing the monster's bride, who upon being brought back to life howls in horror at the sight of the monster who inspired her very creation. It is one of the most memorable scenes in film history. Many have suggested that this is even better than the original "Frankenstein". Obviously,I don't share this view, but it has a great legacy in any regard.
