Most people have not or will not watch silent films. It is however, a strong bet that most people have witnessed the unmasking of Lon Chaney's Phantom in 1925's "The Phantom of the Opera".
There isn't much to say about this movie. It's the definitive telling. Often filmed, and staged but never equaled. Many of Lon Chaney's films have been lost in a cloud of nitrate dust, but we can still admire this towering performance.
