TOP 300 MOVIES OF ALL TIME: # 272 "THE RIGHT STUFF" (1983)

In 1983, the Academy Awards erroneously provided "Terms of Endearment" with the Best Picture Oscar. Why? Because "The Right Stuff" is a far superior film to the James Brooks' drivel, no matter how well acted.

"The Right Stuff" starts out with Sam Shepard portraying Chuck Yeager trying to break the Sound Barrier. Strangely, he does not get chosen by NASA to be an astronaut.

The rest of the cast is superlative. Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard, Ed Harris as John Glenn, Dennis Quaid as Gordon Cooper and many more. It is a stirring film about courage, exploration, commitment and patriotism with overt jingoism. It projects complex characters where previously there was iconography.
