Another Attempt to Murder Free Speech in Denmark

From: Gatestone Institute

"I live in a government safe house. I wear a bulletproof jacket. I have not walked the streets ... in more than seven years. [I am] imprisoned in my own country for the mere fact that I have spoken out against the enemies of the West." — Geert Wilders, MP, Netherlands
Lars Hedegaard, a well-known seventy-year-old free speech activist and critic of Islam, narrowly escaped a murder attempt on February 5 outside his home in Copenhagen, Denmark.

An unidentified assailant wielding a handgun fired a shot at Hedegaard, but fled on foot after the bullet missed its intended victim and the gun subsequently jammed.

According to Danish media, the gunman, in a postal service uniform, rang the doorbell of Hedegaard's apartment building on the pretext of delivering a package. When Hedegaard opened the front door, the man pulled out a gun and fired a shot, narrowly missing Hedegaard's head.

Danish police say they are searching for the suspect, whom they describe as "a man of a different ethnic background than Danish." He is believed to be in his 20s and has a "Middle Eastern appearance." Speculation is that the assailant is a Muslim because of critical statements that Hedegaard has made regarding Islam.

Hedegaard is the president of the Danish Free Press Society, a watchdog group that often warns that free speech is under threat from radical Islam. Hedegaard also co-edits a weekly online newspaper called Dispatch International, which covers stories in Danish, English and Swedish about a variety of topics, including content that is critical of radical Islam.

Hedegaard's partner, Swedish journalist Ingrid Carlqvist, says the attack was a brazen attempt to silence a courageous free-speech warrior, one who has not been afraid to challenge official myths about the impact of multiculturalism and Muslim mass immigration on European society.

As if to prove Carlqvist's point, Danish officialdom has uniformly linked the attack on Hedegaard with the exercise of free speech in the country.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a Social Democrat, said: "An attack on Lars Hedegaard is a heinous act which I condemn in the strongest terms. It is even worse if the attack is rooted in an attempt to prevent Lars Hedegaard to use his freedom of expression."

Former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who leads the center-right Liberal Party, said the attack was a "cowardly and cruel act." He added: "If this action is rooted in preventing Lars Hedegaard from using his freedom of speech, we are witnessing an attack on all Danes."

The former leader of the conservative Danish People's Party, Pia Kjærsgaard, who has long warned about the negative effects of multiculturalism and runaway immigration, said it is "un-Danish" if people cannot give their opinions without risking their lives. She added: "It is incomprehensible and shocking if the motive is political. If this is the case, it shows that it is dangerous to make use of our constitutional freedom of expression.

Denmark Stick It To the EU

From: American Thinker

One of the crowning achievements of the European Union was the elimination of passport controls when crossing national borders within the Union itself, making the EU analogous to the United States in terms of ease of travel. Yesterday, that edifice started to crumble, when Denmark announced that it would institute passport control . France 24 reported:

Denmark was on a collision course with the European Union on Thursday as it defended a plan to unilaterally enforce stricter border controls, a policy which reflects growing resentment across Europe toward the EU "open-border" policy.

"We see a rise in cross-border crime: drugs, east European gangs, human trafficking, money smuggling... And one of the efficient ways to fight this is border control," Danish Finance Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen said Wednesday on Danish television, adding that the enforcement measures would "be put in place as soon as possible."

Danish authorities have planned to invest over €20 million in more customs officers and advanced surveillance equipment to implement a new system of random checks of cars and passports at its borders with Germany and Sweden.

Denmark: Getting Immigration Right

From: Gates of Vienna

Denmark Suspends the Schengen Agreement

C.Cantoni sent this terse announcement a few hours ago:

Denmark has suspended the Schengen treaty and re-introduced controls at its borders with Germany and Sweden. It was announced by the country’s Finance Minister, Claus Hjort Frederiksen. . .

As our regular readers know, the Baron has been following closely the events in Italy as its coast continues to be inundated with boatloads of refugees from North Africa and environs. Besides documenting the numbers of asylum-seekers, he’s also been commenting on the EU’s stunning willingness to let Italy simply drown in effluvia.

Though the bureaucrats in Brussels have offered some limited, limp-wristed assistance and a few sermons, there has been a marked lack of any robust help for Italy during this siege. However, it appears they’re actually worried enough to hold secret meetings about the situation.

The most concise and informative MSM story [I could find] was half a world away, here:

Hedegaard Show Trial in Denmark

FREE SPEECH setback in Denmark

From: American Thinker

I learned of the horrific "honor" murder of a 20-year-old Muslim young woman in Michigan by her pious Muslim stepfather, within a short time after receiving news of the profoundly disturbing turn of events in the Lars Hedegaard show trial (background here, here, and here).

Juxtaposed, the two stories epitomize the self-loathing depravity afflicting the West

The press release from the Danish Free Press Society summarizes Hedegaard's setback, and his determination to fight on as an example for all who cherish free speech, and refuse to accept the barbaric misogyny of totalitarian Islam. Our founding President, George Washington elucidated the stakes quite well: "If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."
President of the Free Press Society, Lars Hedegaard, declared guilty of racist statements

Lars Hedegaard was today found guilty of hate speech under Article 266b of the Danish penal code. The background is a good 35 minutes long interview to the site snaphanen.dk which Hedegaard gave in December 2009.

Here Hedegaard said, among other things, that "girls in Muslim families are raped by their uncles, their cousins or their dad." Lars Hedegaard has previously expressed regret if his statements gave the impression that he would accuse all Muslims of abusing their children. The day after the interview he stressed that his opinions were about Islam and not Muslims.

Sharia Law In Denmark?

This is from "The Blog Prof". Short and sweet and to the point

From: The Blog Prof

Video: "They Yell 'Sharia For Denmark' And HE Gets In Trouble?"

Danes might as well line up and put lay their heads on the chopping block. They have accomplished just as much on a societal level with their insane immigration policy couple with a non-existent birthrate:
